Counting the days until your birthday sounds simple — but the math has a few wrinkles worth understanding. Whether you are planning a party, booking a trip, or just satisfying curiosity, here is how birthday countdowns actually work.
To find how many days until your next birthday, you need three pieces of information: your birth month and day, today's date, and whether this year's birthday has already passed.
If your birthday has not happened yet this year, the countdown is simply the number of days from today to your birthday date in the current year. If it already passed, you count forward to next year's date instead.
If you were born on February 29, your birthday only appears on the calendar every four years. In non-leap years, you have two options:

The number of days until your birthday decreases by 1 at midnight (local time). This means if you check at 11:59 PM on April 28 and again at 12:01 AM on April 29, the count will have dropped by one. All calculations are based on calendar days, not 24-hour periods.
